Prefixes for the Unity Domain

The following is a list of prefixes that campus departments should use to name user, group, and group policy objects in the Unity domain.  The character following the prefix depends on the type of object you are creating.  Use a period for user objects, an underscore for groups, and a hyphen for group policy objects (GPOs).  See the naming conventions page for more information. 

There are many more campus departments than are listed below.  Please send us a message if your department isn't listed or if you want to request a different prefix.

This following a list of all of the DNS domains registered in NCSU's namespace and the computer account prefixes for each. Based on the length of the prefix and the 15-character computer name limit, the maximum number of characters for computer account name descriptors is shown.

Some of the prefixes listed below are longer and will make naming computer accounts difficult.  We will create an exception and update this list as long as you request one.  Please send us a message if you want to request a prefix exception.

* Computer account prefix prescribed for domain is not guaranteed to be unique because multiple DNS domains exist that are identical except for the top-level domains. Administrators of these domains can either request another prefix or take measures to keep the computer account names unique within thier namespace.
