Dreamweaver access to Web00

Why WebDAV?

With Novell's Client-32 installed, all requests for UNC paths are intercepted by C32 and redirected to Novell's port 524. This breaks native CIFS to Windows servers, leaving only the ancient and unreliable NetBIOS as a transport.

NetBIOS is disabled on all UNITY.AD servers. This means that Microsys staff wishing to update our webpages must use WebDAV as their transport.

Dreamweaver Configuration

Setting up for WebDAV is trivially easy. When creating or editing your Dreamweaver site, just choose WebDAV as your connection mechanism, and choose http://web00.unity.ad.ncsu.edu:80 as your WebDAV server.

You will also need to enter your Unity username and password to be able to successfully upload files. Exactly as with the regular web page, anonymous reads are allowed everywhere except where an .htaccess file restricts things.

It is very important to specify the host as http://web00.unity.ad.ncsu.edu:80 . The Apache server is configured to serve the same content as dav:// when accessed via the name web00, and http:// when accessed as microsys.

You can mount this space, on or off campus, with the "Add Network Place" wizard in your Network Places, and it will work with non-Windows OS's as well.
