Applications in the Fall 2006 image

Release notes for the "Windows XP Professional with Unity Applications Pre-installed" (aka "appsxp") image, expected to be available on 8-6-2006.

Real time information about application progress and state can be found at http://microsys.unity.ncsu.edu/cgi-bin/apps/inprogress.pl At this time, it is believed that the following applications will be available, but you should check the above link to provide feedback regarding your own testing for anything you consider to be critical in your environment.

We are experimenting with using VMWare's free player software to distribute virtual machines to allow campus professionals to test the "kit" as it matures without having to commit a physical workstation.

Office 2003 SP2
The administrative installation point for Microsoft Office 2003 that resides on L: will be updated. Office 2003 Service Pack 2 and a couple additional patches will be applied. The administrative installation point is used to install Office on workstations which use ITD's NAL applications. This does not directly affect the Office 2003 installations that currently reside on workstations. They will not receive the updates automatically. If you want to update a workstation with the patches that are being applied to the admin installation point, run the "Install or Repair MS Office 2003" app from the NAL.

Will there be a new "no apps" image released and if so, when do you expect to have it?

Also, at what point will the scripting phase start installing the updates to Zen, Kerberos, and AFS?

Ok, looks like you were in the process of answering my first question before I even asked it, thanks.

;-D gotta love it when I do get a chance to clear a question before it is asked. Alas! It doesn't happen often enough.

We /are/ going to have a NoApps, in part because we're planning on not using WolfCall this fall. With Kerbero V auth in OpenAFS, and the Zen 7 agent seeming to get it's policies even on machines with loopbacks, we think we're ready. We'll be more certain after we get some testing done.

I'm doing the images first, then following up with the scripting. So we won't have the script-only updates until (well) after 8-6-2006, when the apps kit is due.

The script upgrade is going to be a big deal, because Novell has moved the Dynamic Local User (DLU) that Wolfprep depends upon OUT of Client-32, and into the Zenworks agent. We're basically going to have to replace the entire scripting engine to work around that. I'll be worth it though, as we'll improve the real and perceived security of the overall system.

I’m sure that I’m the only normal person here. Why would I think so? Because no one normal would have written anything like posts below on this kind of website.
