ITD_Web Servers has read rights to wds00

I've made some changes to wds00 so that the web servers can securely deliver the WDS iso files.

Apache is now mapping /download/installation to the share "//wds00.unity.ad.ncsu.edu/wdsboot"

This share has been created, and given ntfs read rights for the group "ITD_Web Servers"

This allows apache to deliver the ISOs without granting excessive rights to \\wds00\distribution$ which has some private stuff on it that might be readable should the ntfs permission be assigned there.

For things that we want to download, please make an Apache alias for /download/whatever to a share where you keep the "whatever" files, and grant read rights in ntfs for the "ITD_Web Servers" group. This should prove much easier to secure that publishing all of DFS. :-)

AdminStudio SMS Edition 8 Available

AdminStudio SMS Edition 8 allows you to repackage applications into MSI installers, create transform files, as well as some other application tasks. This product is free for SMS customers! You only need to obtain a registration number from a web page that is displayed at the end of the installation and then specify an SMS server (SMS00), domain username and password so it can check to make sure you are running SMS.

This edition does not include all of the features of the very costly professional edition but it will allow administrators to perform many common application tasks. The SMS edition includes some features specific to Microsoft application delivery not availble in the other Zenworks edition.

The installer has been downloaded to:
\\unity\itd\Applications\Macrovision\AdminStudio SMS Edition 8

More information is available here:

SMS00 Upgraded to R2

I have installed the SMS 2003 R2 components on SMS00. The components are:

  • Inventory Tool for Custom Updates
  • Custom Updates Publishing Tool
  • Scan Tool for Vulnerability Assessment
  • Device Management Feature Pack

The installation created a few new application packages:

  • Custom Updates Tool
  • MBSA 2.0
  • Vulnerability Assessment Tool

The installation also created some new collections. These collections only include my workstation (URLACHER, Go Bears!).

I haven't tried out any of these new features yet but they look pretty cool.

The OS Deployment Feature Pack is also an updated component of R2. The CD contained a link to install it, but all that did was bring me to the OSD web page. Patrick had planned to install it so I didn't proceed.

This post describes how to configure your workstation to use the SMS Administrator Console to connect to a remote site server.

It finally works... $%#@!@# Novell Client!

Can somebody please try this on your workstation and report the results back to the blog in the next day or 2? Thanks.
